Walters Apartments Social Services is Here for You

September 6, 2022

The Walters Apartments Social Services team works closely with property managers to address needs in our communities and holds exciting events to best serve our residents. Whether it’s through our Shuttle Service, Coordinated Activities, Residents Events, or Assistance with Medicare and Medicaid – our Social Services staff offers a variety of ways to help our residents.

The Shuttle Service provides weekly transportation to residents in our 55+ communities. Each month, the shuttle takes residents to a restaurant, a shopping venue and travels to places like Atlantic City, Cape May or Smithville for a fun day trip. This is a great way for our residents who do not drive to experience freedom without paying for a taxi or asking a relative for a ride. Our shuttle is wheelchair accessible.

Our Activities Coordinator is considered the “face” of Social Services, going above and beyond to develop, schedule and host at least three activities each month at all our properties. We regularly hold BINGO, crafts, knitting groups, community breakfasts, after-school snacks and weekly yoga classes for our 55+ communities. We also hold fun, seasonal events such as a Luau theme party or Summer Barbecue.

This summer, we offered our family properties activities like Shark Week, Nature Week and Kindness Week. During Kindness Week, our youngest residents learned how to give and receive a compliment, made get-well cards for a young, injured girl and prepared peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for community members. In 2017, we started an annual event called “Cops & Kids” which has been a huge success!

Our Social Service Coordinator works one-on-one with residents as needed to assist Medicare/Medicaid recipients with questions and concerns, especially during the “Open Enrollment” period. The coordinator also helps residents with entitlement applications such as SNAP, utility assistance, Medicare entitlements, Medicaid applications and more.

Every property has a food pantry that consists of nonperishable food, household items and personal hygiene products. In some communities, we offer a “Care Closet” twice a month. We recently held a Back-to-School Drive offering supplies to just under 250 households.

The holidays are a busy time for us! We work with local non-profit programs to give out food baskets at Thanksgiving and Christmas. We hold holiday toy drives, which are facilitated through Walters and community nonprofits. We also work with a program that runs a “Be a Santa to a Senior” program. During Easter, our communities hold Egg Hunts for children with exciting raffles and treats!

Walters Social Services always strives to improve the lives of our residents while also hosting fun activities as a way for neighbors to come together! If you need to get in contact with a Social Services representative, contact 609-607-9500.
